Stillwaters Youth Support Services

Individual & Family Counseling

Children meet with a family/art therapist to discuss the impact cancer is having on the family and in their lives, as well as discussing feelings and learning new ways to cope with the illness of a family member. This is short term counseling - all families are eligible to receive up to six sessions with a family counselor.

Stillwaters services are offered free of charge and without obligation.

Brave Hearts: Youth programs and services                                    Sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Oconomowoc Area Foundation Fund

The goals for this program are to educate and support children while a parent/significant person in their life in undergoing cancer treatment.

Objectives:

  • Children’s knowledge about cancer and treatment will increase.
  • Normalization of feelings.
  • Children will be better able to identify strengths and normalize anxiety.
  • Children will be better equipped to express and manage anger appropriately.
  • Communications about feelings will improve.
  • Communication is facilitated with the parent/significant other who have cancer.
  • Children will learn that they are not alone and will be better equipped to cope in the new unsettling environment.

Why are support programs important to children?

When one family member has cancer, the whole family is affected.  When that family member is a parent, he or she can be overwhelmed with trying to understand the diagnosis, treatment options, personal reactions and emotions, along with how the illness will affect the family.  Providing children with open and honest age-appropriate information from the beginning of the diagnosis will lead to feelings of trust, control and involvement.  Child experts recommend that children be involved in any illness that affects the family, yet parents are often at a loss to know exactly what to do.  Stillwaters programs help children learn that being sad, frightened and even angry is a normal part of the cancer experience.  The program helps children to identify and moderate their feelings without having to “stuff” them or feel overwhelmed by them. They also learn about cancer and treatment options and how to communicate with other family members during this difficult period.
